Having experienced his first action on the 800cc machine during the Valencia test earlier in the month, Bautista travelled to Portugal with Aoki to get some valuable track time at the Estoril circuit as the Rizla Suzuki team collected more feedback ahead of the start of the 2010 season.

Bautista completed more than 200 laps over the three days and experienced a range of weather conditions, which included rain, overcast skies and sun, all accompanied by cool temperatures. The Spaniard tested some new specification engine components on the GSV-R, as well as aerodynamic parts and Akrapovic exhaust systems.

Aoki continued with the test programme started by Loris Capirossi in Valencia, further assessing new parts ahead of the winter break.

“Suzuki is very pleased to have been able to complete this test for two reasons – firstly to give Álvaro essential additional seat-time on the GSV-R and secondly to give Nobu the chance to do some important testing on a GP track outside of Japan,” explained Suzuki team manager Paul Denning. “Nobody in Suzuki or in the team is under any illusions regarding the amount of additional performance needed out of the GSV-R for 2010 and whilst the test items have not been night-and-day differences, they will certainly help the overall package be a lot stronger when we get the new bike at Sepang in February.”

Bautista, who by the end of the test was lapping consistently around the 1’38.5 mark, pleased Denning with his display.

“Álvaro has been very impressive over the three days and has completed 212 laps with absolutely no errors,” said Denning. “His pace at the end of the test is very respectable, especially considering that there were only two bikes out there on track. With cooler conditions and no rubber being laid down the conditions were not as good as they were at the race weekend last month. He has gelled really well with the whole team and is taking a very calm approach.”

The team are now looking to the next scheduled test in Malaysia in February, as Denning added, “It is now a long time until Loris and Álvaro get to test again. We really wish Loris could have been here in Estoril, but we are grateful to have had this opportunity to point us in the right direction as Suzuki strives to become competitive in 2010.”

Wednesday saw the Spaniard set his best lap on the third and final day with a 1.34.163, and Bautista will now travel to Estoril in Portugal with Rizla Suzuki team test rider Nobuatsu Aoki, as he continues his education on the machine.

“I’ve enjoyed it so much, the people here are very professional and I feel so good working with them,” said Bautista. “I’ve taken it step by step and have improved; each time I went out on the bike I felt better. Each day we went faster, and I’m happy with the three days.”

Suzuki team manager Paul Denning said of Bautista’s performance, “Álvaro’s transition to the four-stroke and to the team has been seamless; he looks very comfortable on the bike and appears to have ridden within his own abilities in this first test on the GSV-R. He has treated the three days not so much as a test, but as an extended track-day. He has certainly had some fun as well as beginning to understand the characteristics of the bike.”

Denning added, “He didn’t run any of the updated parts, so to make consistent low 1’34s is a very positive start. He’s very focused and is an enthusiastic character to have in the pit and we are looking forward to having an enjoyable and hard-charging atmosphere with Loris (Capirossi) and Álvaro for 2010.”

Loris Capirossi and Álvaro Bautista continued in a positive direction during the penultimate day of testing at Valencia, as the pair made use of the improved conditions in Spain today.

Capirossi (1′33.211, 58 laps) produced his quickest ever lap on a Suzuki GSV-R around the 4,005m Ricardo Tormo circuit on race tyres as he resumed from where he left off yesterday by trying the new parts that Suzuki has supplied for this test. Capirossi tested new-spec engine parts as well as continuing the evaluation of the Akrapovic exhaust systems and some new electronic strategies.

Bautista continued with his acclimatisation of the Suzuki GSV-R following his step-up in class to MotoGP. Using the same specification bike as was raced the previous weekend – without any on the new parts – he circulated the Spanish circuit a further 73 times today, eventually fishing with a best time of 1′34.540, over a second quicker than his fastest lap from Monday.

The Rizla Suzuki pair has a further half-of-a-day of testing tomorrow morning at Valencia, which will signal Capirossi’s final outing on the GSV-R for 2009, with only Bautista travelling to Estoril next week to join Nobuatsu Aoki for a further three-day test.

Loris Capirossi:

“It has been a positive day because we have continued to develop the bike and we tested many different things. We tested a new engine specification and a couple of sets of pipes as well as a different electronics system on the bike. We have improved today and the whole team is quite happy and for sure the way to go quicker is now not so far away. We have a couple more important things to try tomorrow, especially on the electronics side. I think that the condition we had in the bike today was easily the best for the whole weekend and this is why we went much better. We still need to concentrate really hard and tomorrow will be an important day as will the test next week in Portugal for Álvaro and Nobu, because we need to understand as much about the bike in these tests as possible.”

Paul Denning – Team Manager:

“We’ve got through a lot of work today and the conditions have been quite kind so that has helped us as well. The time difference from Loris to the front guys has reduced massively compared to race-day and this has been due to a number of modifications to the bike that the factory has introduced here. The most important one of those has without doubt been the change to the engine spec, which has helped a lot with the smoothness of power delivery and the way the bike exits the corners.

“Alvaro has been quietly impressive today. On every pit exit he has made 10 or 12 lap runs which have been ultra consistent and he has lifted his pace steadily all day. His bike is completely the same specification as was used in Sunday’s Grand Prix – without any of the test parts Loris has been running – so bearing that in mind his pace looks encouraging for the future. So far – in summary – it’s been a better test already than we expected and a little bit of light is on the horizon.”

After a nine year hiatus from the Perth indoor arena, Super X organisers delivered a demanding technical track that Moss exploited to full advantage on his all-new fuel injected RM-Z250.

Easily recording the fastest qualifying lap time, Moss went on to win his heat and immediately secure a finals berth.

US rival Kyle Cunningham won the remaining heat but missed the start in the Pro Lites final after the gates were held long after the five second board was displayed.

Moss, however, showed his class with another holeshot and by the end of the first of the eight lap final had established a four second lead. From there, Moss turned in a flawless ride on the fuel injected Rockstar Motul Suzuki RM-Z250, extending his lead throughout and was never challenged.

He continued to build a commanding lead and was able to cruise through the final lap to secure another dominant victory.

Team Shift Motul Suzuki Development Squad star Lawson Bopping found himself caught up in the carnage of the first lap, leaving him in second last position.

The hard charging Bopping worked his way through the field with a fearless display of riding to snatch second position – and his first podium of the season – on the final lap to secure a Suzuki 1-2 finish.

Moss’ win ensured his perfect season to date remains intact with three wins from three rounds. His maximum points haul at each event has allowed him to build up a substantial 15 point lead nearing the halfway point of the season and he looks determined to defend the red plate.

Bopping’s first podium and race consistency this year has moved him up to third place overall, while SP Motorsports/Byrner’s Suzuki rider Adam Monea had another strong round to move into fifth place in the championship standings overall.

The Australian Super X Championship heads to Canberra this weekend for round four.

MATT MOSS – TEAM ROCKSTAR MOTUL SUZUKI
“The new fuel injected Suzuki RM-Z250 is easily the best bike I’ve ever ridden. I’ve only had it for three rounds, but it just keeps getting better and better.

“Today was a great result. After I got the holeshot I built up a lead and then did what I had to do to win the race. It’s certainly easier when you’ve got the best bike out there underneath you.”

JAY FOREMAN – TEAM ROCKSTAR MOTUL SUZUKI MANAGER
“That was another great effort by Matt. The bike ran superbly and Matt continues to go from strength to strength.

“We all know anything can happen in racing, so it makes this start so important to our championship defence. Those points in the bank could prove crucial in the end.

“For now, everything’s running smoothly and we’re looking forward to Canberra and another top performance by Matt and the new fuel-injected RM-Z250.”
