• Ryan Dungey took his eighth overall victory in a row on Saturday at Unadilla with his 1-1 moto victories.

• Dungey now leads the AMA Pro Motocross series by 111 points aboard his powerful Suzuki RM-Z450.

• Temporary teammate Clement Desalle from Belgium went 2-2 for the day and finished second overall, making it a Rockstar Makita Suzuki 1-2 podium.

Rockstar Makita Suzuki had a banner day at the ninth round of the AMA Pro Motocross series at Unadilla. Dungey went 1-1 to take his eighth overall win in a row, and temporary teammate Clement Desalle, who’s on break from the FIM Motocross World Championship series, went 2-2 for second overall for the day. Dungey and Desalle dominated the motos with their powerful and smooth Suzuki fuel-injected RM-Z450s, and Dungey added points to his already impressive lead in the series.

In the first moto, Ryan Dungey showed Unadilla he was ready to race and ready to win. Dungey took charge immediately by grabbing holeshot and never looking back. While new teammate Clement Desalle, who’s currently second in points in the MX1 GP series, took second off the start. Dungey led the race wire-to-wire and by the end of the moto, Ryan was nearly 13 seconds ahead of the rest. Desalle made an impressive showing by following Dungey to the finish line to take the second spot on the podium.

At the start of moto 2, Desalle took up the second spot again while Dungey followed in third. Desalle quickly hunted down the leader and passed him for the lead, while Dungey worked his way into second. While Desalle tried to stay at the front, Dungey had other plans and moved his way to the front of the pack. Dungey finished the race with a nearly 12-second lead, and Desalle finished in second.

Overall, the Rocktstar Makita Suzuki duo of Dungey and Desalle finished 1-2 for the day. Teammate Matt Moss finished 14th in the first moto but pulled off the track in the second moto after 13 laps, putting him in 32nd place. Moss finished 19th overall for the day.

Ryan Dungey is now 111 points ahead of the next closest competitor in the AMA Pro Motocross series and has won the last eight in a row. Dungey’s also coming off the announcement that he’ll be representing the United States in the Motocross of Nations, a team headed up by his current Team Manager and five-time World Champion and Suzuki legend Roger DeCoster.

Round 10 of the AMA Pro Motocross series takes place on August 28th in Southwick, Massachusetts. Dungey and the whole Rockstar Makita Suzuki team are looking forward to racing there.

The Yoshimura Suzuki team of Daisaku Sakai and Nobuatsu Aoki took victory in the drama-packed Suzuka 300km Endurance race today, overcoming torrential rain showers, and ever-changing track conditions.

The start of the race was delayed, but with the weather refusing to clear the decision was made to run and the teams faced 300 kilometres of wet and dry racing with totally different conditions on the east and west sides of the famous Suzuka International 5.821km track.

FCC TSR Honda rider Kosuke Akiyoshi led the early part of the race until Honda Dream RT rider Chojun Kameya took the initiative. Kameya was soon suffering with grip issues due to the wrong tyre choice and the Yoshimura Suzuki pairing made their way carefully to the front on lap 28 and held it to the flag.

The Yoshimura Suzuki with Jomo team were all delighted with this result, having now tested and proven a number of parts, settings and tactics ready for next month’s Suzuka 8 Hour race.

Team Rockstar Motul Suzuki star Cody Cooper continued his climb to the sharp end of the Australian National Motocross Championship with a polished display at Toowoomba in Queensland at the weekend.

After struggling early in the season with the dry, hard-pack Australian surfaces, Cooper showed why he is regarded as one of the fastest riders in the country: After qualifying fifth fastest, Cooper was quickly on the pace aboard his Suzuki RM-Z450 in the first of the three Pro Open motos, and fought an epic battle with Tye Simmonds and Dean Ferris, being pipped for a podium finish on the final lap.

In the second moto, Cooper grabbed the holeshot and was involved in an absorbing battle with an in-form Billy Mackenzie on the Scot’s home circuit. Cooper notched the fastest lap time for the race and proved he is back on top of his game.

Another fifth in the final moto secured his best points haul for the season and fourth position for the round. He is now seventh overall, but has improved his points haul in every round and is looking forward to the next round at Raymond Terrace, NSW.

After qualifying well, Team Rockstar Motul Suzuki Pro Lites young gun Lawson Bopping endured a difficult round. Bopping was on top of his game at the last round in Canberra, but finished this round in 11th position.

His 30 points saw him drop to sixth overall in the Pro Lites championship; however the team is confident he can reclaim the 2009 form that saw him the heir apparent to Matt Moss’s Pro Lites crown.

Team Rockstar Motul Suzuki Team Manager Jay Foreman was philosophical about the day’s results.

“Lawson finished last year in fantastic form, getting stronger and stronger with each round and we know he’s good enough to do the same this year.

“Cody gets better and better each round as he gets more familiar with the bike and the different Australian tracks.

“We have the equipment, we have the riders; and we look forward to Suzuki pushing its way to the top of the table again in both championships.”

After a fourth place in the first race, Team Suzuki Alstare rider Leon Haslam fought tooth-and-nail to take a podium in the second race at the Monza World Superbike Championship fifth round in Italy to keep his series lead intact.
Haslam was charging after Cal Crutchlow in second place, but then inherited runner-up spot when Crutchlow slid off at the first chicane. Troy Corser (BMW) was in Haslam’s wheeltracks for the last few laps, but the GSX-R1000-mounted Briton held him off to take his seventh podium of the season.

Haslam’s team mate Sylvain Guintoli finished 10th in race one, but then improved in race two: He was on course for a terrific sixth place, but the smallest of mistakes in the last turn allowed Noriyuki Haga (Ducati) through.
Max Biaggi (Aprilia) won both races today with Yamaha teammates James Toseland and Cal Crutchlow taking second and third in race one.

Leon Haslam – Race 1: 4th, Race 2: 2nd:
“Today was a hard day and I’m happy to leave Monza still leading the title race. Max was strong here and I knew it was going to be tough pair of races. The podium in race two was very hard work, but I didn’t want to miss out on a podium today and kept battling away. I had a really big ‘moment’ in race two and was way out of the saddle twice in the space of a fraction of a second. Somehow I stayed on the bike, but it was a very close thing! After Cal crashed, Troy kept me on my toes, but Max was too far in front for me to catch so I just made sure of runner-up spot. I did something to my wrist when I had my ‘moment’ and it felt pretty sore, but I managed to carry one to the end. In race one, I lost contact with the leaders and then had a bit of a grip problem for the last four or five laps and couldn’t get out of the corners as fast as I wanted. We made some little suspension changes- just a few clicks here and there – for race two and the bike was definitely better to ride.”

Sylvain Guintoli – Race 1: 10th, Race 2: 7th:
“Generally the weekend has ended not so badly. I enjoyed the second race because I was involved in a really good fight with Nori Haga and Tom Sykes. I managed to pass Nori right towards the end, but then I made a very small mistake in the last turn and he got me back. Seventh is not so bad after how the weekend began, but I have learnt that I – or me and my team – have to manage practice and qualifying better and get into a good, consistent rhythm as soon as we can. Not doing that means a low grid position and this Championship has so many good riders and bikes that you cannot afford to be way down the grid if you want to be a contender. I think I probably could’ve got fifth today if it hadn’t been for a crash right in front of me on the opening lap. I had to take avoiding action and go straight on at the first chicane and lost time in the process. But I fought hard and caught up the guys ahead, before my good battle with Tom and Nori. I am happy with my performance in race two and now I want to build on that and be much better at the start of a race weekend.”

Kagayama was originally the rider chosen to ride for the high profile Japanese team’s debut, but in this weekend’s British Superbike Championship round at Oulton Park, the Worx Crescent Suzuki rider in Race 1 was hit from behind, resulting in a high speed crash.

The heavy fall left Kagayama with a compression to his T7 vertebrae and having to undergo further tests will be unable to take part in Yoshimura Suzuki’s debut.

Daisaku Sakai has already been called in to replace Kagayama and has already arrived in Italy.

On March 27, 2010 Tom Gates of La Porte, Texas jumped from #10 on the “Standing Mile Over 200″ list to the #1 spot with an amazing run of 261.500 making him the new owner of the all-time record for the standing mile on a motorcycle.

In the world of land speed racing, the standing mile 200mph mark is so passe that it only places you #169 on the all-time list over 200. The 210 mark has a ranking of 78th, 220 the ranking of 40th, 230 the ranking of 24th, and 240 the ranking of 14th. Only seven men held claim to the 250 honors until this weekend. Lee Shierts was the lonely man on top of the boards with his record run of 260.288 set at Maxton back in 2006.

The now holy ground for speed freaks in Goliad, which has only been active for seven years, is certainly the rival to the Maxton Mile at the Laurinburg-Maxton airfield just outside Maxton, North Carolina for top end enthusiasts and now lays claim to the overall motorcycle record. The 8000′ long and 200′ wide surface called the Texas Mile had a previous record of 259.900mph held by Shane Stubbs set last season.

In February of 2009, Tom Gates was the inaugural subject in a new column on Dragbike.com entitled “Person of the Week” sponsored by Schnitz Racing. In that interview Tom indicated he was transforming his land speed turbocharged Busa into a Pro Street quarter miler with plans to race in the Hurricane Alley and AMA Dragbike Series. At the end of the 2009 season, he decided to get back to what he was destined to do – land speed racing.

After selling off all his top end equipment, he started buying it all back and making wholesale changes to get him to the top of the game. In a mad dash that only started three months ago, chassis changes where trusted to McIntosh Racing along with the addition of their swingarm. RCC supplied the new Super Ultra turbo kit, JE Pistons their new Sever Duty turbo pistons, along with valve springs from Bob Carpenter. The use of stock cases, stock head and crank, and a set of Carrillo rods completed the engine package. After a clean black paint job by Colt Bateman, they were off to the Texas Mile.

As the Suzuki Hayabusa was off loaded the goal this year was to use finesse as opposed to Tom’s usual balls out, go for broke approach. With a winner take all purse up for grabs on Saturday, the plan was for easy runs on Friday towards a run at the record starting Saturday. On Friday, the first shakedown pass was an effortless 189mph pass. Run #2 with a gradual boost increase from gear to gear netted a 221 pass followed by a 244mph run to round out the day.

Saturday was the money day. Right out of the box on the first pass of the day and only the fourth pass of the new bike, Tom laid down the record breaking pass of 261.500mph. The next morning, Tom was on what he knew was a better run when he clicked it off into 6th gear, the bike shut off. After a quick inspection at 200+mph, he discovered that the kill switch had been knocked into the off position by the tether as it got caught in the wind.

Tom’s winnings were sequestered by wife, Cindy.
The remainder of Sunday turned out to be windy, so Tom called it a day, took the cash and left the Texas Mile as the new undisputed king of the standing mile. Tom would like to extend his appreciation for this honor to first, Jesus Christ, then his lovely wife Cindy, his longstanding faithful crew of Chris Brandon, who did all the welding and wiring, and Mark Dearza. In addition he could not have pulled this off without the help of Ryan Schnitz of Schnitz Racing who worked with Penske to develop a new shock and was on hand to lend his expertise throughout the project. Tom would also like to thank his other sponsors Richard Pettler of RCC Turbos and Mike Gelt of Third Coast Speed.

Standing Mile races are becoming more popular and will boast five events this year. In addition to the Texas Mile and the Maxton Mile, there are additional events in Miami, Mohave (California) and Elvington in the United Kingdom.

‘The fastest speed on a conventional motorcycle by a female pilot is 374.208km/h (232.522mph), by Leslie Porterfield (USA) on a modified Suzuki Hayabusa at Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, USA, on 5th September 2008,’ says the recently issued Guinness World Records certificate. So, yes, while Leslie was already the fastest female motorcyclist in the worldwhen we last spoke to her back in December 2008, her record setting feat now has Guinness’ official stamp of approval.

‘Bonneville is an amazing place. Its stark white expanse of salt makes it seem other-worldly. The competitors are welcoming. Everyone that goes to Bonneville has a passion for the sport and the camaraderie is unlike any other sport,’ says Leslie. ‘I had a great time taking my Hayabusa to a record speed of 232mph, and a production CBR1000 to 192mph. It was an amazing year for me,’ she adds.

‘I returned to the salt in 2009 and set a record at 234mph, with a first run at a spectacular 240mph average through the mile. The return run ended up being a little slower due to wheelspin,’ says Leslie. ‘I took the prestigious ‘Top Speed of the meet on a Motorcycle award’ that year and this was the first time in history that a woman took that award. I’m excited about returning to the salt this summer for more record-chasing,’ she says.

So how exactly does it feel to have that certificate from Guinness, we asked her. ‘I still haven’t found a permanent place for my Guinness Record certificate. I move it from place to place… In my shop, by the bike, home… I just need to make some good copies. Maybe it would make good wallpaper!’ says Leslie.

Now, while she’s ridden bikes faster than most of us ever will, there’s more to Leslie Porterfield than just speed. There’s also style. She’s shot with top fashion photographer, Markus Hofmann, at BMW’s Aerodynamics Test Centre in Munich, Germany.

‘We chose not to use any motorcycle outfits, as Leslie already has many pictures like this and I wanted to do this shoot with haute couture. I called Karl Lagerfeld’s agent and they were happy to send across some outfits. Marcel Ostertag and other fashion designers were also involved. In the end, we had a choice of about ten items, of which Leslie chose four to model,’ says Hofmann. ‘It was cold in the wind tunnel but she put up with that extremely well,’ adds Art Director Dirk Meycke, who, along with the rest of the crew, kept their winter coats on throughout the photo shoot…

After fast bikes, fashion shoots and a thriving business of her own, what’s next? ‘In the future, I am hoping to go faster and look forward to chasing more records. I think as technology improves, we will continue to see faster speeds – I hope we will all safely achieve higher speeds every year. The biggest change for me ahead will be piloting a new motorcycle – this new challenge makes the 2010 season a very exciting one for me,’ she adds.

Well, we’re sure Leslie will keep getting faster and… umm… faster! We wish her all the very best.

Michael Jordan Motorsports (MJM) scored a double podium and maintains the championship points lead after completing races three and four of the 2010 AMA Pro National Guard American Superbike Championship held at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA this weekend. National Guard Jordan Suzuki’s Jake Zemke scored a second place podium finish on Saturday and finished fourth in Sunday’s race. After a strong third place finish in Saturday’s race, Jordan Suzuki’s Aaron Yates crashed in the Sunday practice, sustaining a fracture to his lower right leg.

During Saturday’s race, Zemke came up just short of the win at the line with a second place finish after leading 12 of the 21 laps. Zemke had started the wind-delayed race from the second row but was in the lead by turn three. On Sunday, Zemke struggled a bit from a poor start, ending up with a fourth place finish. Zemke leaves Fontana with an 11-point lead in the championship.

Michael Jordan Motorsports Team Riders
“I got a great jump at the start of Saturday’s race and was able to get to the front after a few turns,” Zemke said. “Aaron and I mixed it up for about the first 10 laps or so. My bike was working great and I was feeling pretty good. (Larry) Pegram was able to get by me there near the end and I tried to catch him at the line but just came up short. It was great to be up on the podium with my teammate. The whole team did a great job. Today’s race was a different story for me. I didn’t get the jump at the start like I did on Saturday and that made it tough starting from the second row. I just wasn’t able to hook up with the front group, so I had to settle in for fourth. My crew did an awesome job once again and we learned a lot from this weekend so we’ll come back even stronger for Road Atlanta. It’s a bummer Aaron broke his leg – it was a bizarre, unfortunate incident. I hope to see him back out here as soon as possible.”

Jordan Suzuki’s Yates started out the weekend on a positive note by setting the fastest time in Friday’s first qualifying session, earning the pole since Saturday’s second session was cancelled due to the high winds. Yates was strong in Saturday’s race one, leading several laps and ending up on the box with a third place finish. Yates had already thrown down the fastest time in Sunday morning’s practice session when he crashed coming out of turn 10 and was run over by M4 Monster Suzuki’s Chris Ulrich. Ulrich was right behind Yates when he crashed and was unable to avoid the contact. Yates sustained a fracture to his right tibia and fibula and will require surgery later this week.

After success in Australia, Team Suzuki Alstare riders Leon Haslam and Sylvain Guintoli are looking forward to getting back on track at round two of the World Superbike Championship at Portimao in Portugal this weekend and chasing the podium again.

This is the third time that the Autodromo do Algarve is hosting a round of the championship, though this year the race takes place in the spring instead of its usual end-of-season date.

Following the opening round at Phillip Island, Haslam is leading the World Championship by nine points with Guintoli fifth, and both are determined to do well at the 4.592 kilometer circuit. Haslam was in superb form in the pre-season tests at the track in January, and Guintoli too showed that he had become very comfortable with the 2010 GSX-R1000 Suzuki Alstare bike. Both riders are eager to continue their attack on the championship and also keep Suzuki at the top of the manufacturer standings.

Leon Haslam:
“Portimao is a fantastic circuit and probably the most demanding one on the calendar. I think all riders like it because it is such a challenge and when you do a good lap there, the feeling is fantastic. From the very first time I jumped onto the Suzuki I knew that the bike could be a contender and so far, I think we have proved that. The whole team has given me tremendous support and we are all now looking forward to another good weekend in Portimao. I went well there in the pre-season tests and I will be chasing two more podiums for sure.”

Sylvain Guintoli:
“I am very pleased with my start to the season and I cannot tell you how happy and comfortable I am with my bike. Of course, every time I go out on it I learn a bit more, but already I am thinking of podiums and that is a good feeling to have. It has been a long break since the first race and I am itching to get back in the saddle and racing again. Portimao is a great track, but very, very challenging. I think it is one of the best race tracks in the series and I will be doing my very best to get on the podium there.”

Though normally the friendliest of faces around the road-racing pits, the 42-year-old father-of-seven is likely this weekend to have no interest in idle chit-chat.

The fifth and final round of the Castrol Power 1 New Zealand Superbike Championships hit the new Hampton Downs circuit, near Meremere, this Saturday and Sunday and Stroud is perfectly positioned to reclaim the national superbike crown he last held in 2006.

For the past three seasons the premier title has crossed the Tasman with Australian Suzuki star Robbie Bugden, but this year it’s the Kiwi Stroud who holds the balance of power, a massive 43 points in front of Bugden with just two races on Sunday to decide where the trophy goes this season.

Stroud took his Brother Suzuki GSX-R1000 to two commanding wins in the class at the previous round at Feilding’s Manfeild race circuit, while an electrical glitch meant Bugden failed to finish one of the day’s two superbike races and this may have ultimately crippled Bugden’s title defense.

“I have a good points advantage but I’m not taking anything for granted,” said Stroud this week.

“I need to finish only eighth or better in the first race and that should do it but that doesn’t mean I’ll be riding conservatively. I always race to win. ”

“I have heard that Craig Shirriffs (Honda, of Feilding) has been going fast in practice at Hampton Downs and that will make it interesting if he’s in the mix as well.”

Meanwhile, in the 600cc sports production class, the battle looks set to continue between series leader Nick Cole (Kawasaki), of Hamilton, and Christchurch Suzuki rider James Smith. Just 6.5 points separate the pair at the top of the standings.

The tussle for formula three honors is expected to heat up at Hampton Downs between Manawatu friends and rivals Glen Williams (Suzuki) and Jason Easton (Tigcraft Aprilia).
Easton is 16 points behind Williams, but there are three races scheduled for this class over the weekend and that means 75 points are still available and anything is possible.

Dannevirke’s Geoff Booth (Suzuki) is 36 points ahead of Christchurch’s James Hoogenboezem (Suzuki) in the 650 Pro Twins class, while Hoogenboezem’s bother, Alastair (Honda), already has the 125GP class title in the bank.

Alastair Hoogenboezem starts this weekend 90 points ahead of Orewa girl Avalon Biddle (Honda), but the race is still on for the minor placings with Biddle just four points clear of third-ranked Jaden Hassan (Yamaha) as they start this weekend’s event.

In the sidecars class, Wanganui men Stephen Bron and Dennis Simonsen (Suzuki) have a solid 56-point buffer over Canterbury pair Dave Annan and Warwicks Demmocks (Suzuki).
The New Zealand TT titles are also at stake in each of the classes this weekend.
